Chemical and physical characteristics of polyethylene

PE properties are not universal values: they depend on the specific material, temperature, exposure and the way the part is designed.

01

Properties must be understood in context

Mass, stiffness, flexibility, impact response and thermal behaviour can vary between polyethylene families and grades. Pigments, additives, wall thicknesses and the production process also influence the final result.

For this reason, we do not present general numerical values as though they applied to every product. Relevant data must come from the documentation for the material actually selected and from the checks specified for the project.

02

Environment, substances and service life

Behaviour in relation to chemicals, solar radiation, humidity and temperature depends on specific combinations of substance, concentration, contact time, temperature, load and formulation. A general description does not constitute a statement of compatibility or safety.

03

Information to bring to the initial discussion

A meaningful assessment starts with the actual use and the criteria by which the component will be accepted.

  • Substances or materials that will come into contact with the part
  • Expected temperatures, exposure and service life
  • Loads, handling and installation conditions
  • Standards, tests or requirements specified by the customer
