Rotational moulding: an essential overview of the process

Loading, heating with rotation, cooling and demoulding describe the cycle in general terms; the actual process depends on the product.

01

The general principle

In the rotational moulding process, a defined quantity of material is loaded into a mould. During heating, the mould rotates around multiple axes; cooling and demoulding then follow.

This description is intentionally general. Temperatures, times, speeds, material and equipment depend on the product and are not presented here as operating parameters.

02

The four indicative stages

The cycle can be described in four main stages, which must always be interpreted in relation to the project.

  • Loading the material into the mould
  • Heating and controlled rotation
  • Cooling the moulded part
  • Opening the mould and demoulding
03

From the principle to manufacturability

Understanding the principle is not enough to establish manufacturability. Geometry, undercuts, openings, tolerances, finishes, tooling and volumes require a dedicated review.
